Mario Kart Deathmatch 12 2024 Photo Recap
Some wait for Summer, others for their Birthday or Christmas. Me, I wait for Mario Kart Deathmatch! Fortunately, Fall 2024 is here and that means the 12th Annual Mario Kart Deathmatch. As luck would have it Halloween just happened to land on Thursday, taking over the weekly Vancouver Parkade Session. Once again, costumes, weapons, racing and rebel-rousing was on! Scroll down to get grip of photos from the night.
We got lucky in 2023 and had a dry night, but this year was soaking wet. Forget the postman, neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these parkaders from the swift completion of their appointed rounds of Mario Kart. Everyone got dressed up, and armed themselves for the occasion and met up at the Art Gallery. Hosted by Chase Johnson and Kady Messenger everyone gathered to be led on the adventure.
Lets not forget the cherry on top. Burton Temple not only makes custom awards each year for the podium, a wildly sought after prize, but he also makes a series of “Mystery Boxes” adding to the Mario Kart mayhem.
What’s in the box? Well Burton puts a special assortment of devious weapons to just like in the game. You have to get the box to find out and then use it on your opponents!
Let’s get to the action. Did I mention it was pouring rain? We set out through a series of garages, each with their own special flair. Some were a Le Mans start, Chinese Downhill, choose your own direction, and more. Some were wet from top to bottom. Some were dry. Every garage had Mystery Boxes, a start, a finish, and a hidden Bean obstacle floating around on a One Wheel with a giant cardboard cutout Thwomp.
Possibly one of my favorite photos of the night is of Team Pizza Kady coming down from the top after hanging mystery boxes ahead of the racers.
On we went from puddle to puddle, garage to garage, each race gathering bruises, memories and points towards their overall total to determine the winners. Some are just here for the laughs and stories, others definitely want the glory. No matter what your goal, outrunning security is always one of them. While most of the evening was in and out without much hassle, we finally ran into the fuzz at our last garage. Not to be bested, the course was all set, Chase gathered the racers and waited for just the right moment. When security parked their car to stop everyone and got out, it was GO TIME! Everyone pushed off and the race was on.
After a long night of pushing the limits of weapons and wetness, points were calculated and awards determined. Everyone was stoked and fed a ton of pizza thanks to Team Pizza. So who won what?

Team Pizza has done it again and delivered another steaming hot fresh slice of Coast Outlaw Series racing. Huge thanks to Chase and Kady for organizing, they are the brains behind it all and it couldn’t happen without them.
We have to also thank Burton for the mystery boxes and awards;
Bean for being a literal do-all machine; and Rod and Jordan for all the volunteer support everywhere it was needed.
None of this would be possible without the Coast Longboarding community which came out in numbers despite the rain and incredibly busy Halloween night. It was so awesome to see so much stoke for Mario Kart. Until next year!
