Powell Peralta Dragon Formula Guide

Powell Peralta has been dropping a ton of new Dragon Formula wheels. We’re definitely not complaining, but it can be a little much to figure it all out and ensure you’re getting the wheels that work best for you. That said, don’t be afraid to try something new. The Dragon Formula Wheels are some of the best we’ve ever tired and so far, we havent fond a shape we cant have fun with. Off the hop, Dragon Formula is a Powell Peralta product. You may also see Dragon Formula called SSF or Soft Slide Formula. These are the same but have been split at the divide between 85A SSF and 88A Dragon where the formula clearly goes from “feeling soft” to “feeling hard”. SSF come with a core, but Dragon formula does not. If you want Bones Wheels, then you need to be looking for the X Formula Wheels and they come in X97 and X99.

We’re covering the Powell Peralta Dragon Formula which, for now, comes in 85A (G-Slides SSF), 88A, 93a, and 97a. Dragon Formula Wheels are basically split between Symmetrical and Asymmetrical shapes and range from 50mm to 64mm. For the most part Dragon Formula Wheels are a “natural” color, but there has been a run of green wheels done in the original release 93A shapes.

Overall the idea behind the Dragon Formula is to create a wheel that feels both smoother and more forgiving on the “streets” (Streets Versus say smooth parks), while remaining responsive and performing like a hard wheel. Skaters have very specific ideas of what works best for them, but most will agree, that they want to reduce vibration, shock, flatspot, chunks, chips, and deformation to keep a wheel rolling longer, faster and truer. Basically the wheel should help with the tricks not hinder. Powell is trying to go beyond thinking simply about how to do that with shapes and is literally trying to reinvent the wheel with chemical science to make a better urethane.
