Throwback: Danger Bay 2023 Mike Rutter Photos
Coast Longboarding’s Attack of Danger Bay was 6 months ago and that means it’s 6 more months until this epic festival of skate is back. Start planning now. We can’t wait! This past year was a return to some normalcy after a few years of ‘secret’ invite only Danger Bays to keep it alive during restrictions. It felt very much like returning home and reuniting with so many friends and family. Fortunately for us, Mike Rutter was also out for the weekend and had his camera. So we’re throwing it back to this past Danger Bay with a few select photos from Mr. Rutter – thanks Mike!
The Attack of Danger Bay is one of the longest running downhill events in the world and never disappoints. Bricin Striker Lyons and Coast Longboarding host a multi-day longboard extravaganza in the otherwise quiet costal community of Pender Harbour. Events include a push race ending in a big air dock dive, slide jam, longboard hockey tournament, and of course the Downhill Race. Mixed in with the longboard events are May Day long weekend events hosted by the local community like the Parade, Carnival, Dance and more if you want to go looking for them. Longboarders have always been in the Parade and Longboard Hockey happens in the courts at the festival grounds. If that’s not enough, you can always count on some incredible live music at the Racers Camp ground thanks to Bricin and his musical connections. This past year I was particularly stoked to see the return of Loose Tooth, a Coast Longboarding Punk favorite for sure – we can never get enough Poop on our Pee Pee!!
While we wish we had more photos to share of everything we get to experience over the weekend, we also like to enjoy the weekend. Best thing you can do is plan on coming to the 2024 edition, May long weekend. You never know when it will be the last Danger Bay, would hater for you to have missed it and never got to experience this legendary event. Fortunately, we had the homie Mike Rutter out for some of the events and he shared some photos with us. Thanks Mike! – you should definitely follow his insta @mikeruttr
Race
First up we have a selection of race photos. The race covers a wide range of categories, but I think our favorite is Business Class. Get dressed up in your best business attire, and bring a briefcase, maybe drop an obstacle in front of your opponent, its a lot of fun! The big talk of the year was moving from Hay to Tires for Carnage Corner. Some people were bummed. But the race went on and everyone lived. We forget who won all of everything really but we managed to pull this from Coat Insta… ha ha…sorry.

Slide Comp
The Danger Bay Slide Competition is one of the last remaining from the golden era of Slide Jams and Comps and frankly we wish there were more of them. If you know any good ones, hit us up. Shout out to Kurt and the Virtual Slide Jam that’s been happening online. Anyways. Danger Bay Slide Comp always happens on the same road (even if they say it doesn’t) and for the past few have been in the afternoon. But they used to be in the morning, bright and early, BEFORE the parade at 10am. This year was a return to the early morning, which meant Corey (Shut up Corey!!) was yelling SLIDE COMP and telling everyone to wake up long before it was time to go to bed, and then lost his voice by the time it was morning. The morning start is tough, but it has it’s positives and I get why having it early gets the day off in a special way, then the parade, then longboard hockey…
Podium for Slide Comp was Jake B, Clayton A, and our very own Harlen!! However there was a ton of shredding going on and shout out to Burton, Mark (judging), Ben W, Russell on the return hell ya Russell!! and so many others who threw down, slammed, got up and got back at it. Too many to name really, which is remarkable all in itself. Hope to see even more Slide Comp competitors next year!
